LITHUANIAN CONTEMPORARY DRAMA EVENING AT THE FINNISH NATIONAL THEATRE

Sigitas Parulskis’ intense play The Ferryman (Keltininkas) is a hilarious depiction of a man in the midst of a mid-life crisis. Henrik, the main character, goes to see a doctor only to be “sentenced to death”. He starts to live his life as if every day was his last, until he finds out that it was all a well spun plot. But why, and was it really just a plot?

Tickets: 5€, ticket sale only in the Finnish National Theatre.

DRAMA READING EVENT AT Q THEATRE

14.00-14.45 Goodbye Vienna / Jaan Undusk
15.00-15.45 Annika / Marius Ivaškevičius
16.00-16.45 Jasmiini /
Inga Ābele

Goodbye, Vienna (Gertrud) by Estonian playwright Jaan Unduski is an intellectually and erotically charged contemporary comedy. The Estonian philosopher Adolf Nietzche arrives in Vienna at the moment when Estonia regains its independence. Gertrud, a young member of a Baltic German noble family, wants to decipher the essence of love and freedom with Mr. Nietzche. Goodbye, Vienna was translated into Finnish by Anu Laitila.

Lithuanian playwright Marius Ivaškevičius' Annika (Artimas miestas) is an engaging study of Nordic lifestyle, double identity and people’s need to lead more than one life. The main characters of the play are Annika, a lonely stay-at-home mom from Malmö, Sweden, and her husband Svante, who is gadding about in Copenhagen, Denmark. On an ironic, metaphorical level, we meet two more characters: The Little Mermaid, the classical H.C.Andersen character, and Karlsson-on-the-Roof by Astrid Lindgren.

Jasmin by Latvian playwright Inga Ābele is a primitive play in three acts. Set in today’s Latvia, Jasmin portrays three generations of women who face each other without seeing each other. The play also depicts the irrevocability of relationships between men and women, with touches of laughter. Jasmin was translated into Finnish by Anniina Hankkio.

The readings will be followed by artist meetings and discussions on the featured plays.

Event is free of charge.
