Over the past ten years, Latvian theatre has left the Baltic shores to conquer leading European theatre festivals. The invasion of international territories has been lead by individual theatre makers, the New Theatre Institute of Latvia and its international Homo Novus Festival. The most praised flag bearer in the international debut of Latvian theatre is Jaunais Rīgas Teātris (The New Riga Theatre) with its visionary directors. Thanks to the Baltic Circle Festival, Finnish theatre goers have been treated to the following JRT productions: Tailor’s Days in Silmaci (1999) and Dostoyevsky’s Idiot (2000), directed by Viesturs Kairišs, and Alvis Hermanis’ The Story of Kaspar Hauser and Revisor (2003). Hermanis’ Long Life and Sonya visited Tampere Theatre Festival in 2005 and 2007.

Ice - A Collective Reading of the Book with the Help of Imagination in Riga is a stage adaptation of the novel Ice by contemporary Russian author Vladimir Sorokin. It is a story about an extraordinary sect - blond, blue-eyed people in search of their counterparts - the heart-driven people in the society. However, to become one of these chosen ones a severe trial must be passed. The hearts of potential members of the group are hit with an ice hammer till they either die or reveal their real names. Ice - A Collective Reading of the Book with the Help of Imagination in Riga completes a stage trilogy, built on the literary material and by the same creative team, director Alvis Hermanis and artists and designers Monika Pormale and Harijs Brants.

Jaunais Rīgas Teātris (The New Riga Theatre - JRT) is a professional repertory theatre catering for the independently thinking contemporary spectator. The art is innovative in its content and form. Although JRT is a state-owned repertory theatre it has retained the spirit and working methods of a theatre studio persistently holding on to the values of non-commercial art. The artistic principles of JRT are simple: high professional, ethical and aesthetic quality. In the era of mass production and stress JRT wants to affirm humanism, vitality and emotions and search for the way back to harmony and simplicity. JRT often rehearses a piece for more than a year. Productions are not made only for the main stage (470 seats) but also for other spaces at JRT and elsewhere.
