Call Cutta in a Box is a one-to-one-show. It is a third part of Rimini Protokoll’s Call Cutta project. The first two parts took place in 2005 in Calcutta, India and in Berlin, Germany as a mobile phone theatre tours.

Imagine you are buying a ticket at the box office for an individual show on a specific day, but are not led to the auditorium of the theatre. Instead, you get a key and will be guided to a door. You open the door and find a phone ringing.

You pick up the phone and a person with a strange accent strikes up a conversation with you. The person seems to know the room you are sitting in, even though he is about 10.000 km far away. The voice belongs to a call centre agent in Calcutta, India. He and his colleagues usually sell credit cards and insurances via the phone to people on the other side of the globe. Or they are providing navigational help in cities they have never been to. But this time you are not supposed to buy anything.

By now, you are standing in front of the window and your transcontinental conversational partner is pointing out to you some curios people on the other side of the street. A story is about to develop and you are realizing that the call centre agent and you with your city are the very first protagonists of the plot.

Rimini Protokoll is a label for the projects of directors Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzel. All three directors are working internationally with theatre projects that are using experts, not professional actors. I.e. Stefan Kaegi visited Tampere Theatre Festival in 2006 with his perfromance Mnemopark – A Miniature Railway World.

Call Cutta in a Box is a co-production with eight significant European theatre organizations. The performance will visit in each co-producer’s – festival or theatre – hometown during the year 2008.

In Finland Call Cutta in a Box will continue in August as a part of Helsinki Festival´s programme.
