“As Viking Daoists of Europunk we play our new show about the global financial crisis.”
In spring 2008, Baktruppen began working on their new production by taking a trip to Malta. There they visited an ancient armoury filled with ornate suits of armour used by the Knights of Malta. They also visited a modern mint, where money is made for people to waste. Baktruppen returned from Malta decked out in armour, and with a new interest in global economics.
From these ideas they developed a musical concert containing songs about human development - from the Iron Age up until the present global financial crisis. One of the instruments is made from the spine of a cow that had been submerged in a fjord outside of Bergen for three months – but that's another story.
The Norwegian theatre group Baktruppen was established in 1986. They have performed at most of the major contemporary theatre venues and festivals across Europe and presented their work in North America, East Asia and Africa. Their unique approach to the process of devising work, their desire to honestly engage with the audience and, not least, the humour and enjoyment in their work, have made them one of the most important and innovative European theatre groups of the past 20 years.
