Conte D'Amour

In April 2008, the unbelievable secret of Austrian Joseph Fritzl shocked the world. He had kept his daughter in a cellar-bunker for 24 years, impregnating her several times, which resulted in a secret family hidden from the outside world. How could this happen? International media was in ecstasy looking for answers. Was this a symptom of  a ”minding one's own business” attitude? Is the dark history of Austrian Nazism a silent one of denial? When intellectuals like Nobel Prize winner Elfride Jelinek entered the discussion, the connection between patriarchy and national guilt was established as the main explanatory dynamic.

But what if the Fritzl case is more of a European affair than a strictly Austrian one? And what if the reasons are more simple and banal, for instance wanting someone exclusively for yourself to worship and jealously protect from others? If that motive has relevance, it’s not only a story of horror but also a story of love. The combination of the unheard of horror and the well-known figures of a love story bring the Freudian ”unheimlich” into play in a disturbing way. Conte D’Amour is a demo performance. The premiere of the full performance will be in May 2010.

Institutet (former Teater Terrier) is perhaps Sweden’s most talked about theatre group right now, partly due to its artistic profile that sometimes includes the media as an actor in plays, but also because the concept of ”postdramatic theatre” has recently entered the scene in Sweden, raising numerous questions about what theatre is and what it can be. Nya Rampen is a Helsinki-based theatre group with a history of fruitful collaborations with Wasa Teatern, Teater Viirus and Institutet in the production “Best of Dallas” – a performance that was presented at Baltic Circle 2007.
