Gogol Evenings: The Fair

In celebration of Nikolai Gogol’s 200th anniversary in 2009, Baltic Circle presents Gogol Evenings: The Fair by SounDrama. The performance is based on Gogol’s breakthrough novel Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka. The music, composed especially for this performance by SounDrama Studio,  is based on classical and ethnic music, as well as on opera and rock. The performance combines various genres in a colourful manner, revealing the rich palette of Gogol’s texts. The world on stage exists somewhere between reality and dreams. This world, inhabited by either people or spirits, appears to be absolutely unreal. Is this an amusing fair or a witches’ Sabbath? A lovely young lady or a delusional spirit in the sun? Is it a wonderful story of love and potential happiness, or just the devil playing with us?

SounDrama is a creative team of musicians, actors, sound designers and choreographers. They blend genres together in order to produce innovative, uncommon and captivating art projects, from theatre performances to concerts. SounDrama has created its own genre by synthesizing music and drama in a fresh new way. The groups’ performances are a new kind of musical theatre that cannot be categorized as either musicals or as dramatic plays.
