Finnegans Ueinzz

Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce is the inspiration behind Finnegans Ueinzz.  Joyce's language play incites Ueinzz Theater Group to create a fresh new “language of theatre”. The scenes are created from textual stimuli, images, sounds, myths, personal experience and dreams. The performance’s structure is free, changing with each performance. The stage is filled with various elements and the viewer can choose to follow one or several of the many threads on stage, thus creating a subjective theatre experience. The group reinvents itself in a journey through Joyce’s language, in which the actors and spectators come together to celebrate life’s possibilities.

Ueinzz Theater Group is constituted by mental health patients, arts professionals and philosophers. The group was born in 1997 when director Renato Cohen was invited to coordinate theatre activities for psychiatric patients. The initial idea proposed by one of the participants was to do “real” theatre, as opposed to theatre “by loonies, for loonies”. Ueinzz Theater Group moves stagnant borders and questions prejudices and assumptions. The company has been invited to many major biennales of contemporary art (e.g. the Kassel Documenta in Germany and the São Paulo Biennale in Brazil) and has performed in many prestigious theatre festivals.

Finnegans Ueinzz is in the programme of Mielenterveysviikko.
